Duomo di Milano
Milan Cathedral, or the Duomo di Milano, is one of the largest Roman Catholic cathedrals in the world. Up to 40,000 people can fit inside. Its construction began in 1386, and it took five centuries until it was complete! It has a central location in the city, with Piazza del Duomo surrounding it, and all the main streets converge here. The cathedral holds a nail that is said to have been used for the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The Duomo was built around the locations of the ancient basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore and Santa Tecla. Their remains, along with the remains of the Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti, can be seen in the Archeological Area. The Central Terrace offers stunning views of Milan from 45m high. If you wish to head straight to the top, you can buy Duomo Milan Rooftop Tickets to enjoy the panorama. After taking in the skyline, you can further explore the cathedral’s history at the Duomo Museum, which exhibits statues, paintings, stained-glass windows, and historic tapestries.

Santa Maria delle Grazie
A commander in Sforza’s army, Milan’s ruler, gave land in the city to the convent of Sant’Apollonia in Pavia in 1460. There was a chapel there with the ‘Our Lady of Graces’ fresco, depicting the Virgin Mary. A church and a convent were built in the 15th century and named Santa Maria delle Grazie. There are seven chapels on each side of the church. The painting “The Crowning with Thorns” by Tiziano Vecellio from the 16th century used to be here but was later requisitioned by Napoleon and can now be found at the Louvre. The refectory was bombed in 1943, and part of it was damaged. Two paintings were not damaged – Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper” and the “Crucifixion” by Donato Montorfano, and a frescoed frieze.

Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper”
Paintings of the Last Supper in refectories were common in the 15th century, and Leonardo da Vinci created this work for the Dominican monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie. His “Last Supper” was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1980, along with the church and Dominican monastery. The painting was commissioned by Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan. Da Vinci used an experimental technique, which caused it to start deteriorating only a few years later. Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” depicts Jesus instituting the Eucharist and is known for using a linear perspective. The painting was likely created between 1495 and 1498.

Some of the most important works include the “Lamentation over the Dead Christ” by Andrea Mantegna from 1483, which depicts mourners gathered around Christ’s body. Another important work is “St. Mark Preaching in Alexandria”. It was started by Gentile Bellini and finished by his brother, Giovanni, whose “Pietà” is also exhibited in the Pinacoteca di Brera, as is Caravaggio’s “Supper at Emmaus” and “The Kiss” by Francesco Hayez. It shows a couple kissing. The latter symbolizes love for the homeland, arguably the most reproduced Italian painting of the 19th century.
