Beautiful views and delicious wine

This wine tour was one of the best guided tours I’ve been on. The panoramic views of the Langhe hills were gorgeous, and the Barolo region is quite lovely. The wine tasting was excellent, particularly the Barolo, and the winery tour was informative. I also really enjoyed the tour of Alba. The guide knew so much about the local history, which made everything even more fascinating.

A great day trip

The Barolo Wine Tour was one of the highlights of my Italy trip! I had an amazing time tasting Barolo and other wines, and the guide's explanation of the wine-making process was super interesting. I also loved walking through Alba's neighborhoods and seeing the views from the castle. This tour is perfect if you like to try wines!

Barolo Wine Tasting Tour

EXPLORE ALBA

Escape the hectic pace of Milan and visit the Langhe-Roero region, known for its stunning scenery and rich winemaking heritage. Your tour begins at Alba, a medieval town in the center of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Langhe wine region. The city was established during the Roman era and has a rich history, including 12th-century buildings such as the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Torre di Barbaresco, located in the nearby village of Barbaresco. Your guide will lead you through Alba's historic streets and tell you how it became a gourmet destination known for its chocolates and white truffles. If you’re there during the harvest season, you might even see the world-famous truffle exhibition, which takes place on weekends in October and November.

DISCOVER THE LANGHE WINE REGION

After exploring Alba, your guide will take you to a family-run winery tucked away in the charming Langhe Hills for some wine tasting. Here, you’ll be able to taste the "king of wines", Barolo, as well as four other regional reds, such as Barbera and Nebbiolo. Your guide will talk about the history of winemaking in the Barolo region, where vineyards have been grown for more than 2,000 years. Take in the flavors of the best wines in the area while learning about the wine production process, which covers everything from grape harvesting to fermentation.

SCENIC VIEWS AND MORE WINE HISTORY

Finish the Barolo wine-tasting tour with a visit to a historic castle positioned high above the vineyards. Take in stunning panoramic views of the Langhe wine area and its endless vineyards. While you’re there, your guide will talk about the historical importance of the area, from its use throughout the Baroque period to its more recent recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To end the tour on a great note, you’ll enjoy a glass of local wine at the oldest enoteca in the area, where winemaking traditions span generations. Back in Milan, plan ahead with top Milan attraction tickets like Santa Maria delle Grazie tickets to see the Last Supper, or choose a private Last Supper Milan tour for a more exclusive experience.

How did Barolo become the "king of wines"?

Barolo wine has a fascinating history that begins in the 19th century when it became known as the "king of wines". A noblewoman married to a local winemaker brought Barolo to the Savoy royal court. Captivated by the potential of Nebbiolo grapes, she wanted to improve the wine's quality and appeal by refining its production.

The wine's bold flavor and complexity won the Savoy family over, and they made it the official wine of their court. Barolo thus gained its nickname and became a symbol of aristocracy. Today, Barolo is still regarded as one of Italy's most iconic wines.
