Interesting facts about Cinque Terre
THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME
The Italian words "cinque terre” literally mean “five lands” which refers to the region's five villages.
THE VILLAGES ARE CAR-FREE
Most of Cinque Terre’s villages are car-free. The steep terrain and narrow streets are better suited to pedestrians. That’s why local transport relies heavily on boats, trains, and hiking paths. The lack of cars also helps to preserve the traditional atmosphere of the villages.
THE WATER OF CINQUE TERRE IS SPECIAL
The waters surrounding Cinque Terre's villages are not only beautiful but also have a unique biome. The biome helps biodiversity thrive and supports abundant fishing. It makes the seafood, especially the local anchovies, some of the best you’ll find in Italy.
