About Milan Cathedral Tour
Take our Duomo Tour Milan and explore the most recognizable symbol of Milan! The Duomo is the city’s cathedral, an imposing, beautiful building that took nearly seven centuries to complete. Gain expert insights into its art, architecture, and rich history. Book our guided tour to visit both the Duomo's terraces and the historic cathedral interior.
Ascend 45 meters above the ground and enjoy 360-degree views of Milan. It's the perfect vantage point for the Duomo’s 135 ornate spires, especially the largest Main Spire.
Your guide will lead you through the cathedral’s interior: rich, detailed chambers built from Candoglia marble, and a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. Wander its five huge naves, and take in the building’s history. Construction began in 1386!
The Duomo di Milano is home to countless works of art and architecture. In fact, the Gothic cathedral features over 150 gargoyles, more than 3,400 statues, and 96 monumental figures known as Giganti in Italian architectural tradition! For example, you’ll see d'Agrate’s famous statue: Saint Bartholomew Flayed.
Enter the Duomo through a separate priority entrance. That way, you’ll save time - the standard wait can sometimes be an hour long!
If you’re unsure when you’ll visit the Duomo, simply reserve your spot, and pay later once your plans are finalized. Alternatively, you can also cancel up to 24 hours in advance - we’ll issue a refund so you can re-book.
We were very lucky - it was sunset when we were visiting the Duomo rooftop! The views would have been beautiful regardless, but this made it very special. And the inside cathedral is just as impressive, and you only really get a feeling for how huge it is once you’re inside. We also did the Duomo Museum - highly recommend.
Our guide Carmen was amazing. She knew the literal complete history of the Duomo - all six centuries of it - and gave recommendations on what to see in the archaeological area. I also greatly appreciated the skip-the-line tickets, since I definitely did not want to wait in the August sun. All in all, a super interesting and enjoyable visit.

Your guide will also point out architectural marvels, including flying buttresses, pinnacles, and the terraces’ 135 ornate spires. On top of the highest spire - the Main Spire - you’ll see the Madonnina: a statue depicting the Assumption of the Virgin in Heaven.
VISIT THE CATHEDRAL’S HISTORIC INTERIOR
After the rooftop, the Duomo Tour Milan continues to the cathedral’s interior. Explore the main chamber, taking in its immense size: 5 naves divided by 40 pillars, with even the transepts divided into aisles. In fact, the church is the largest in Italy! As you walk, your guide will teach you the Duomo’s history, explaining how Milan’s first duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti commissioned the church in 1386, and how construction progressed over nearly seven centuries.
TAKE IN THE BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK AND ARCHITECTURE
As you explore the cathedral, your guide will point out the cathedral’s artistic treasures: statues, sarcophagi, and architectural achievements. You’ll see the beautiful stained glass window in the apse, the stunning Saint Bartholomew Flayed statue, three grandiose altars by Pellegrino Pellegrini, and more. Did you know that one of the nails used in Christ’s Crucifixion is kept in the Duomo?
Right above the Duomo’s apse, you’ll see a small red light bulb. This allegedly marks the spot where one of the nails of Christ’s crucifixion was placed. According to tradition, each year on the Saturday closest to September 14, the nail is retrieved from the wall by the archbishop of Milan. The ceremony is called the Rite of the Nivola.
